UNHCR’s Made51 initiative works with refugee artisans everywhere, helping them to bring
their skills and creativity to a global audience and bring light and hope to their lives.
their skills and creativity to a global audience and bring light and hope to their lives.
This animation project, “A Thread of Hope” for Made51 and UNHCR, was a genuine highlight to work on.
UNHCR is a global organisation focused on protecting the rights and lives of refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and it felt meaningful to contribute creatively to that mission.
Collaborating with director Troy Browne was a real pleasure; his distinctive style was a perfect fit for the story. I helped collate imagery and create collages for different scenes, which Troy then brought to life, working his magic, adding characters and animating it all.
The film tells the story of Amina and her mother, who are forced to flee their home. When Amina arrives at a refugee camp, she notices a golden thread and follows it, eventually discovering a space where women are crafting beautiful items for Made51. Many of the real fabric patterns from the collection were carefully woven into the scenes to ground the story in authentic details.
The final piece is a moving, visually rich film with a distinctive art style that reflects both the fragility and resilience at the heart of Amina’s journey. Being part of this project and helping shape its visual language was something very special.
